DESCRIPTION:

Privately distributed, this deeply informed institutional history draws on the author’s professional experience with research methods that employ both oral and formal sources: face-to-face interviews with medical doctors near and far, with inventors of equipment and protocols, with staff at all ranks, with nurses serving the full range of hospital services as well as with volunteers intent on bettering the lives of in-patients, out-patients and their families. Other sources include collective memories recalled in committee meetings, in previous historical research and in official documents about administrative structures, government legislation and public policy. Upholding the University of Alberta’s research ethics, this monograph also adopts information stemming from electronic. communications. Each period of the institution’s historical span covered by chapters is supplemented with sidebars which provide biographies and photographs of those who have advanced the services of the Cross. While the author is self-effacing throughout, since medical history is to her a new field, Kathryn adds to factual precision and scientific explication her personal trust in ongoing innovations, in improving treatments, and in the need for the Cross’s long future.
